Employee experience (EX) is the whole of how it feels to work somewhere — every touchpoint from the first interview to the last day, and all the ordinary Tuesdays in between. Engagement asks 'how committed are people?'; experience asks 'what is it actually like to be here?' — the wider, more honest question, because engagement is a symptom of experience.
The moments that make it
- Onboarding — do people feel set up or dropped in?
- The 1:1 and the manager relationship — the single biggest lever.
- Recognition and growth — is effort seen, is there a path?
- Everyday friction — tools, meetings, clarity, the right to disconnect.
How to measure EX without surveillance
The trap is measuring experience by monitoring people — activity trackers, message counts, who-talks-to-whom. That destroys the very trust EX depends on. The honest way is to ask, continuously and anonymously, and to aggregate: a climate read by pillar, an eNPS pulse, the themes people raise — surfaced only above a privacy floor so no individual is ever exposed.
